  <description>Patricia Chin &amp; Clive Chin
VP RECORDS

Ever wondered who put their faith and resources into Sean Paul, Elephant Man, Lady Saw, Morgan Heritage, Shaggy and Beenie Man to make them the international sensations that they are today? During this edition of Initiative Radio, Angela McKenzie sits down with co-founders of VP Records, Patricia Chin and her step-son Clive Chin to discuss the legacy of VP Records, the world's leading distributor of music from Jamaica and other islands of the Caribbean.

In this hour, Patricia Chin, “a Chinese woman living in America and selling reggae music” as she terms herself, discusses what it was like starting out as a small used-record store in Kingston, Jamaica with her husband Vincent Chin. This record shop escalated into a production facility, Studio 17, which helped local artists produce and sell records that would have otherwise had no outlet. In doing this, reggae superstars like Bob Marley and Peter Tosh got to shine. When the Chins migrated to America, the empire of VP Records that we know today, was born and throughout their journey, they've managed to transport reggae music to new heights, from once being street music for the low classes to becoming a worldwide art form for showcasing Jamaican roots and culture.
